Former United Nations Secretary, General Kofi Annan has said, “Access to safe water is a fundamental human need and, therefore, a basic human right. Contaminated water jeopardizes both the physical and social health of all people.”

Most of us know this, but what can we do?

At Jordan Lewis Missions, the water and the gospel go hand in hand. Our work has been to reach the unreached while also finding creative ways to provide for their basic needs.

In one of the most arid and unreached nations of the world, we just hit a milestone in drilling our 200th water pump!

According to water.org, 771 million people worldwide suffer from lack of access to clean water, and nearly 1 million die from sanitation, water, and hygiene-related diseases each year. Sadly, a child dies from a water-related illness every two minutes.

We have witnessed these issues first-hand in the people we serve. Our hearts have broken hearing stories of girls abused, abducted, and raped as they walk the long and perilous roads to get water.

A few years ago, I heard the story of Asia Bibi from my friends in Pakistan. Asia is the internationally known Christian woman imprisoned after drinking a cup of water from a well, owned by an extremist.

She simply took a sip out of a cup on a hot day after walking home from her rigorous job, and was then charged with blaspheming Mohammed. Imprisoned and on death row for eight years, she was finally acquitted of the charge.

Her story and others like it, have impassioned our leader in Pakistan and I to give water to all who thirst in these villages, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. The results have been beyond our imagination! Thousands of lives have been transformed as water brings them to the well, and the saving power of God brings them to eternal life. You can read more about this here in Charisma Magazine.

Our strategy is what makes us unique among many clean water organizations. We start with water but don’t stop there. We offer what money (or water) can never buy; we boldly share the gospel, good deeds, and good news!

Our leader in these regions, my dear friend whose name must remain covered, leads this strategy, with nearly 100 ministers helping.  They are dedicated and fearless, serving a gospel movement while often risking their lives in nations opposed to evangelism of any kind.

Each water pump, which costs on average $500 or less for equipment and laborers, brings clean water, mobilizes ministers to go into the village, and

  • Protects Children – Children and women are protected from being seduced or worse as they go great distances for water.
  • Starts Churches – On average, 3-4 house churches are started with each water pump installed.

It brings me great joy when I think about the tens of thousands who have been saved and baptized through this project, to the glory of God. Our water/gospel strategy is currently working in Nepal and Pakistan, with accompanying efforts in China and other nations.

For the many who have partnered with us in this effort, thank you! JLM will always go to places where the unreached and unengaged await the Gospel.  The harvest is ripe.
